Taiwan Church Planters

July Prayer Update

August 18, 2017

Visitors to Sanxia

Eric’s college roommate Joe along with his wife Margaret and her family visited Taiwan for the first time together this summer and even came to stay in Sanxia.  It was a blessing to see Joe and Margaret after many years and to introduce them to our girls.

We rented a meeting location in Sanxia in late June and have been working hard to make it ready for Bible studies, prayer meetings, outreach events, and Lord’s Day Worship.

Baking Class

Rev. Joel Linton and his daughters Faith and Ashlyn graciously came to Sanxia to help teach an apple pie baking class last week, giving us a fantastic opportunity to meet new friends in our community. Everyone who participated really enjoyed it.

Reformation 500 Celebration in Hong Kong

Thank you for your steadfast support and prayers for the work that God has called us to in Sanxia, Taiwan. We are grateful for how you continue to faithfully partner with us in order to see the planting of more Gospel-centered, Reformed Churches in Taiwan.

Taiwan is a beautiful island with a very healthy democracy and relatively high standard of living, and yet as the recent Grace to City Reformation 500 celebration in Hong Kong made evidently clear, Gospel renewal has not flourished in Taiwan in nearly the same measure as it has in Communist China. At the conference there were thousands of Chinese Christians in attendance to commemorate the 500 year anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, to hear from Pastors like John Piper and Paul Tripp, and to learn more about the 5 Solas of the Reformation (which teach that we are saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, as revealed in the scripture alone, to the glory of God alone) from local Chinese house-Church Pastors. The conference was a wonderful time of Gospel refreshment, a vivid picture of how the Lord has been blessing the Reformed Churches in China, and also a reminder of how much work there is yet to do in Taiwan.

That being said, we are truly thankful that over the past 5-10 years there has been a renewed interest in Taiwan and throughout Asia in planting healthy Churches that are vibrant in their theology and zealous in their mission. Please continue to pray for Taiwan and for the region as a whole, that God would be pleased to raise up more Church planters, missionaries, and co-workers to fulfill the Great Commission by establishing Churches where Christ is truly at the center of all that is preached, taught, and throughout the entire life of the Church.

Grace Church Sanxia

Our Church plant in Sanxia is making the transition from a fellowship which meets Fridays and Saturdays for Bible studies and outreach events, to an official Mission Church that will soon begin meeting for Lord’s Day Worship. Because our core group has been growing, we recently signed a lease for a meeting location which is strategically located in the center of our district; near a brand new library, activity center, and large kid-friendly park. Thank you for your prayers since our last prayer update regarding our search for this location!

We are so excited to finally have a place in Sanxia to worship on Sundays and to have a convenient first-floor Gospel Center where we can host more outreach events like English lessons, Baking classes, and a Summer Bible School. Please pray that God would bless our new Church location and make the Gospel Center a place of rest and renewal for our community. We long to see many people come to faith through the Ministry of the Word at Grace Church Sanxia.

We signed our lease on June 20th and since then have been spending quite a bit of time arranging the facility to be suitable for Sunday Worship on the 2nd-floor and for having a family-friendly Gospel Center on the 1st-floor. The place we rented was previously rented out to a Spa, so there was a lot of work to be done such as tearing down old walls and partitions, installing air conditioning, putting up wallpaper, installing lighting and furnishings, as well as many other small tasks. We thank God that so far the renovations have gone smoothly and the landlord gave us 1-month rent free to complete to arrangements. We also thank God that a nearby Church donated many items which has allowed us to stay on budget for the renovation and decoration. Please pray that God would give us wisdom in how to best use this newly renovated location to be a bright light for the Gospel in Sanxia.

Additional Prayer Points

1. Please pray for our Summer Vacation Bible Classes which will start on August 12th and be on four consecutive Saturdays. We have a need for 1 or 2 additional teachers to help with Bible teaching, crafts, and music. We would like to have at least 18-20 elementary students sign up this year and hope that this Ministry can grow over the years to come.

2. Please also pray for  our local co-worker Michael Liu who will be getting married August 5th in Taipei City. Michael has many family members who have never attended any Church, so please pray that they would hear the Gospel clearly preached and that they would have an opportunity to come to faith in Christ through Michael and his fiancee Rachel’s witness.

3. Please continue to pray for Annie as she seeks to balance the very critical mission work of reaching out to women in our community with staying at home with the children and taking care of our home. Madelyn, our youngest daughter, will be 7-months old tomorrow and Evelyn is 2 and 1/3 years old now. They are both very active and this keeps Annie quite busy, but praise God that she has also made many local friends and her friends are open to the Gospel and have shown an interest in our Church Plant.

With Love,

Eric & Annie
