Taiwan Church Planters

September Prayer Update

Taiwan Church Planters

“It is good to give thanks to the LORD, to sing praises to your name, O Most High; to declare your steadfast love in the morning, and your faithfulness by night, to the music of the lute and the harp, to the melody of the lyre. For you, O LORD, have made me glad by your work; at the works of your hands I sing for joy. How great are your works, O LORD! Your thoughts are very deep!” (Psalm 92:1-5)

Our Dear Family in Christ,

We thank you for your continued support and sustaining prayers for the work that God has called us to in Taiwan. It is good to give thanks to the Lord and for those that He has brought into our lives through His Sovereign Grace. We miss you all and often think of you and the love that you have for us in Christ.

Some of you may have seen reports about all the Typhoons that have been hitting Taiwan the past couple weeks. It seems like one after another this season, and just yesterday we had an exceptionally strong Typhoon named Megi make landfall upon Taiwan. Work and classes were cancelled yesterday and today, but we are thankful that aside from losing power, we are doing well and our community seems to have been spared any major damage. There is another mega-storm called Chaba which is forming and may hit Taiwan next Monday, making it the 4th Typhoon to barrage Taiwan in a very short period of time. Please pray for Taiwan and for those affected by these powerful storms. If you’re interested, here is a link to a website called Windyty which tracks these storms as they are forming in the Pacific Ocean.

New life in Sanxia

As many of you know, at the end of August we moved to a city called Sanxia, a growing part of Northern Taiwan which will soon become part of a large Megapolis connecting Taipei City (the capital), New Taipei City, and Taoyuan City (where the International Airport is located). These three cities will one day be connected by a mass transit system and where we have moved is strategically located right along this future transportation beltway.

After searching for quite some time, we decided to move to a part of Sanxia which is located near National Taipei University and is made up of many new high rises. Most of the residents in this new district are young families with small children and the environment is excellent for meeting new people and building bridges with our neighbors. The community we live in is very open and they have some public areas where we can hold small Bible studies, English classes, and other groups for young children. We love it here and thank God for providing just the right place for us to live and to reach out with the Gospel.

Plans for establishing Sanxia Reformed Fellowship

On October 21st we are going to begin a Mandarin Bible study looking at the the Gospel of John. We will meet every Friday evening and several families have already expressed interest in attending. I am hoping that this Bible study will form the foundation of a future core-group for a new Reformed Church plant in Sanxia. Please pray that God would bless His Word as it is read and taught, and that many people here would come, hear, and be transformed by the Word of Life.

This Bible study is going to be led by a local Seminary Student named Michael who is very close to graduating from China Reformed Theological Seminary. Michael has been serving for years in Indonesia alongside a Chinese Evangelist named Pastor Stephen Tong, and has recently moved back to Taiwan to complete his Seminary training before (hopefully) becoming a full-time Church Planter. Praise God that He has answered our prayers for a Taiwanese co-worker who is passionate for the Gospel and who has a heart for the lost.

Reaching Out

In addition to the Friday evening Fellowship, I have been talking to some people in the community about starting an English Bible class and have seen many people in Sanxia show an interest in practicing their English with a native speaker. Please pray for wisdom about how to best use English as a means of blessing our community and to share the core claims of Jesus through Bible stories.

Since the John Bible study is aimed at believers who already are more familiar with the Scriptures, we also hope on regularly leading a 7-week introduction to Christianity course for unbelievers which will go through the life of Jesus recorded in the Gospel of Mark. Please pray for those who have never heard to be be drawn by God to Himself, and for our fellowship to be a bright light for the Good News in Sanxia.

We will soon be launching a website for our Sanxia Reformed Fellowship as well as printing invitation cards and name cards to share with more people about the glorious grace of our Lord Jesus. Please pray for our daily interaction with new friends in the community, for conversations to turn to Jesus, and that Christ’s name would be exalted here.

I thank God for His guidance and that we are all settled in San Xia Taipei University area. It is a residential area where you see moms with strollers on the road often. I’ve gotten to know more and more people when I shop for groceries or take a walk in the neighborhood. I try to share the Gospel and also how I became a Christian with them. I’ve been studying the book of Romans with two of the moms that I befriended every week. One of them is not a believer and the other lady got baptized recently. As I share I also find myself being challenged by His Word. Thank God for His grace which is indeed wondrous.

I am currently 25 weeks pregnant with our 2nd daughter (It’s a girl!) and Evelyn is now a year and a half and is walking and exploring everywhere. The pregnancy has been going well so far, even though sometimes I lack enough energy to get as much done as I would like to, but this is also an opportunity for me to rely on the Lord more. As you may remember, when I was pregnant with Evelyn my water broke early and I had an emergency c-section. Please pray for God to keep me and our little baby girl safe and healthy — everything is in His hands and His name is worthy to be praised.

Love in Christ,

The Pilsons
